Aren't you the quintessential advocate of not wasting roster spots? If you are the backup and do not have value outside of that, why be on the roster? If you truly believe Dion is just a body, he should be a 3rd RB. Otherwise, bring in someone who can play. And drafting a player early to be a backup is a waste, IMO. |
What do you consider drafting early? You don't really have to answer that. Lesean himself formerly was a backup, drafted in the 2nd round. This is the real world NFL that I am talking about, not the one that most mock drafters live in 100% of the time and the one Andy Reid forayed into where 4th round draft picks get inserted as starters without beating out the incumbent. I haven't seen any source that has Cyrus Gray projected as high as the 2nd round. |
Well to start, do you not agree with that wasted roster spot sentiment?
And really, you can completely take the "early" part out of my post. I don't believe in drafting a backup. You draft on potential and the realization on how likely that player will reach said potential. I don't think there are many GMs that say, "I want this guy, hopefully he can hold down the backup backup rotational passing situational rush DT spot for many many years."
And honestly, do you want a guy like Gray, or any rookie for that matter to take the reigns if McCoy goes down? The spot where you take a prospect is irrelevant in my point of view. McCoy is one of the best. You have your starter for years to come. No need to draft a player when you have problems elsewhere. Pick up a vet to fill a need, don't waste a pick that can potentially be a starter somewhere on your roster. Especially when you have no idea what this kid offers at the pro level. _________________

I'll forever have certain feelings for Jerome McDougle for that hit he put on Eli.
Forever. _________________

Ever heard of building a team through the draft? LeSean is the starter and Dion is the backup. No need to bring in a washed-up up cast off veteran to be the 3rd RB. Dion is here for the longhaul. You suggest signing another 1 year Ronnie Brown roster filler? I love signing veterans to start or backup at more important positions like QB, CB, and pass rusher. But to bring in a garbage veteran RB to at best "compete" with Dion is bad business. The same hope that you put in a washed up veteran being able to supplant Dion is the same hope that I put in Dion taking a step forward in being a really good #2 RB. So we are even there in "hoping," if that's what you want to read. |

Says who? He is an undersized 5th round pick who can't pass protect well yet. We could potentially find an upgrade in this draft.
However, I do like the kid and his familiarity with Shady. But that doesn't mean he'll stick around "for the long haul." _________________

It's called the N.F.L. which means "not for long." The average NFL career for a RB doesn't go beyond the rookie contract so longhaul is relative. My idea of longhaul is based upon the position. The average career of an NFL RB I believe is 2 1/2 years. In contrast Ronnie Brown wasn't signed to be an Eagle with the idea of him ever being here for the longhaul. |

Shady wasn't good in pass proctection when he came out either, Give Dion some time to grow into it. I think Dion will be here as 2nd or 3rd back until his contract runs out. _________________

You use these words and phrases like "supplant" and "here for the longhaul" like Lewis has done ANYTHING to earn the 2nd back spot. It's pretty funny how you want Avant gone as the 3rd WR when he's been productive and you are just willing to hand over the 2nd spot to Lewis when he's done nothing to earn it. Lewis' longhaul is as long as his contract is, if not even less.
Yes, I believe in building through the draft. (see how I don't dodge your questions) However, you already accomplished that when you drafted McCoy. He's a stud. If this offense was different than I can see your point. However, we are in standard, a 1 back offense. Like I said, why draft a complete unknown to be your primary backup? And your "washed up" is just your opinion. Many veteran RBs have success after their starting gig dried up for their initial team. But with them, if Shady gets hurt, I have a decent expectation on what's to come. With a 5th round rookie, I have no idea what I'm getting.
And you're telling me it's "good business" to trust Dion Lewis as the backup? Or better yet, have a late round rookie compete with him to take that spot? _________________

^Yeah, I'd feel safer with a veteran RB/Felix Jones over Dion Lewis/a late round rookieas the backup to McCoy. We're still going all in, I don't know why we wouldn't want a quality proven backup at a critical position. _________________
