I did these fast, so let me know if a correction needs to be made.
On teams where it was too hard to make a distinction between the top two pass catchers, I've included both. It appears that 16 teams have their top receiver (or in some cases at least one of them) drafted in the 1st round.
So it's actually a little more than the amount of 1st round LTs. Negligible difference though. Exactly what I though, a pointless excercise that tells us nothing. But there most certainly are NOT more 1st round LTs than 1st round top WRs. _________________

I'VE GOT IT!
The Vikes pick Kalil at #3 and then bundle 2013's 1st Rnd pick, this years 3rd and 4th Rd picks and next year's 3rd to move up to Jacksonville's #7 overall slot and take Floyd.
Then, with this year's 2nd Rnd pick, grab Barron or H Smith.
Then use the comp picks to get a DT and CB in the 4th Rd.
Then they still have 5 picks in the 5th, 6th and 7th Rounds.
So, we sell ourselves short on top-notch corner talent this year . . . big deal . . . the Vikes get an elite LT and an Elite Big WR in the 1st Round . . both top-10 picks . . . and we're all happy
'cept the Claiborn fans . . . Like I've said before 2 outta 3 ain't bad . . . |

it would take this year's 2nd and 3rd plus a 1st (2013) to get to 7. |

I quoted your post because you offered only half the overall point, as opposed to the whole (that UDFAs at any position are difficult to groom into great starters, not just at LT).
I personally would rather take an LT in the 2nd or 3rd round, and go WR or CB in the 1st. |
That's your opinion and I'm cool with it. I personally find Safety WAY too big a need to go unchecked through round 3. I'd be fine with any of Kalil, Blackmon or Claiborne being our pick in Rd 1 though (In that order). |

Define "true #1 WR".
A rapport can be built with a WR drafted in round 2 in 2012, and later again with a WR drafted in round 1 in 2013, or signed in FA in 2013.
Example: Brad Johnson and Randall Cunningham 'built a rapport', actually, 'quite a rapport' with Randy Moss in 1998, his rookie year.
Rapport building is a rapi, er, quick process.
However, rapport building with a WR cannot happen as quickly if the QB is too often in a prone position, holding the football. _________________

I'm not sure about wingspan or standing reach, but at the Combine Floyd's arm measured 3/8s of an inch longer than Blackmon's. |

Oh, trust me, I'm totally with you on the safety issue. What worries me is that no safety in particular stands out to me as a true impact player; it's an underwhelming group, but for whatever reason, I think that's been the case for the past couple of draft classes.
Which safety stands out to you/who do you like? Is there more than one? _________________

VR . . . I'm curious if you're Mike Mularky (a former Vikes TE) or the new owner of the Jags, Mr. Khan, calling a shot like that . . . lol . . . in lieu of offering this year's 2nd Rd pick to get to the #7 overall slot in a trade with the Jags. offering the extra 3rd and 4th round pick is fair -- forget the points chart.
The Jags are a decent team, but are much like the Vikes were at the end of 2010. So, they can take a bevy of picks via this trade and add good players they need at DE or WR, or they could work their way back up into the 2nd, grabbing two 2nds this year, while having 2 1st Rders next year. In 2013 and 2014, they could be stacked for the AFC South.
As I recall, they need help at DE and WR, so in that case maybe trading a current player such as Everson Griffen and a mid-Rd pick would entice them -- but I suspect they'd take the extra picks (actually I'd even throw in this year's 5th rather than take a piece from the D Line rotation to save too many picks for the Vikes).
In the end, the Vikes would have 8 picks this year . . . but three of them would be #3, #7 and #35 overall, and then have two 4ths, a 6th and two 7ths.
I could live with that, especially if the Vikes went:
#3 = Kalil, OT
#7 = Floyd, WR
#35 = Barron or H Smith, SS
#128 = Brandon Brooks, OG, Miami (OH)
#134 = Ron Brooks, CB, LSU
#175 = Najae Goode, MLB, West Virginia
#210 = Dale Moss, WR, Sd State
#223 = Brandon Hardin, CB, Oregon State
Do better than that with the first 5 picks and I'll tip my hat to ya. |

Yup, the safety class is pretty bad this year. I wouldn't spend any of our 1st or 2nd round picks on one this year. Maybe take a flyer on a guy like Janzen Jackson in the later rounds. There's no sense in reaching on a safety, considering the relatively importance of the position, and the draft class. _________________

I only truly like Mark Barron. I hope he falls to us, but it seems doubtful. But he was an All American safety, and a hard hitting one. He also has pretty good coverage skills and most importantly he catches INT's. Thing that worries me a bit is he didn't play all that "deep" at Alabama and that could lead to him biting on play fakes. I screamed my head off whenever Abdullah bought on one of those, and want a safety who won't. |

I adamantly agree. This is 2008 all over again. Mark Barron and Harrison Smith could easily turn out to be this year's Kenny Phillips and Tyrell Johnson. It was a two safety class in 2008 and their values were extremely inflated because of it. And look what happened, we reached for one of the two and got stuck with one of our biggest busts of the last decade.
Now, I like a Barron and Smith better than Phillips and Johnson, but I think both have big enough question marks that I wouldn't touch either in the 1st round. I'd take Barron @#35 as he's worth the risk there, but I'd have to think long and hard about Smith at that point. I like him, but I feel like he's going to get overdrafted whenever he goes. _________________

Floyd is having a private workout with the Vikings.
Any chance he is an option at 3? Or are they just covering their bases in case they trade down. _________________

just being diligent. Floyd has to be considered an option for the Vikings pick (whether or not at pick 3). Given Floyd has major character flaws, its necessary to put him through a private workout to get a better understanding of his mental makeup.
I dont want any part of taking a WR at 3, but if MN does, Floyd is the one I want. |
