I'm just not "wowed" by Claiborne. Like you said, he was never even the best CB on his team.
If you are drafting a corner at #3 he better be a Revis/Bailey/Woodson type of elite, shutdown playmaker. |
He's always been the best CB on his team. |
Doesn't make him the best NFL prospect. |
He's the best pure CB to come out in the draft, in the last 10 years. Yes he's graded even higher then Revis. |

CONSPIRACY!!!!!!!!
Spielman said what he said because the guy who wrote the article basically called him out on the possibility of not drafting Kalil. Spielman said exactly what we've all been saying.Add to the fact that Eli Manning is as far from being a mobile QB as you can get. They don't have an elite LT and they just won the SB.
Lack of CB in FA, as well as Safeties. Major activity in bringing in guys with blocking ability. _________________ Welcome to Minnesota, Greg Jennings.

I don't think we'll be seeing as much C2 this year. I really don't. Every team runs a form of it anyway. I think a guy like Claiborne allows our DEs more time to rush as he can shadow with the best of them. _________________ Welcome to Minnesota, Greg Jennings.

If he's the best in the last 10 years, Mathieu will be the best in last 11.
You can't just use the "pure cornerback" as a reason he's better than PP. I do happen to agree that he is, but you can't disregard a player as whole package... I don't hear people saying Harvin isn't a good receiver because he's not cracking 1000 yards. He's a returner and runner as well... Whole package is still important in evaluating a player. |
Have you seen his arms? Mathieu can't pray hard enough for those. They are the BEST part of Claiborne's game. Even if he isn't right on his man, he can still reach in and bat the ball down.
PP was a better prospect as a whole. Meaning he can do more then play CB at a high level. But Mo is a better pure CB, flat out. He stepped in from day one his freshman year and never looked back. _________________ Welcome to Minnesota, Greg Jennings.

To be fair, we haven't had major activity in any positon
I still don't really see this team drafting Claiborne. We don't put money in the position because of our defensive scheme (and for good reason), Christian Ponder is Spielman's guy and I'm sure he wants to protect him, and his and Frazier's comments towards the beginning of the offseason (saying that wideouts and corners are the strength of the draft and free agency) seem to suggest that they'd prefer to draft line help high. But then again, that could be smokescreen as well, I suppose. |

Who is the new DC? And where did he previously coach?

I think a guy like Kalil prevents opponents DEs from rushing the QB effectively as he can shadow the best of them. Support: USC track record.
Edited to add: Cook acquitted. Cook, Winfield, and 2nd or 3rd rd CB = good start. _________________

He only played very minimal time freshmen year, but I am aware of his success. I agree he's a shut down corner. But he's not at a level I'd draft at #3, and I disagree with him being the best CB prospect in 10 years. But that's not saying I think he's bad. _________________

We didn't play C2 as much last year, that's where I'm getting it from. We blitzed 2 and 3 LBs more then ever. We had guys playing man more then you think.
And no to Cook and Winfield. Winfield was kept most for a nickle role. He cannot be relied upon to be a full time starter. _________________ Welcome to Minnesota, Greg Jennings.

Totally agree, Winfield is completely suited to thrive as a nickel CB now. We need that second bona fide starter opposite Cook now. Sounds like Spielman is thinking the right way! _________________

Another thing I want to add is if this report had been about Spielman's love for Kalil. You Kalil supporters would not being clamoring about a 'smoke screen'. Let's be honest. _________________ Welcome to Minnesota, Greg Jennings.

I like Claiborne a lot but it is amazing the way he is being over hyped. I am sorry but if not for his history Janoris Jenkins would be the top rated CB in this draft.
Hell there is a real argument that could be made that for our team Dre Kirkpatrick would be a better corner than Claiborne. |

Am I the only one that thinks that CB isn't close to our biggest need? I would rank our needs as:
1. LT
2. S
3.WR
4. RG
5. CB
Cook/Winfield/Allen is a good set of 3 corners. We obviously need someone to replace Winfield, and a solid #2 that would keep Winfield in the slot would be ideal, but we could survive with the corners we have now (assuming Cook stays out of trouble and Winfield stays healthy). The safety positions are far bigger problems in the secondary.
If we can get a #2 CB in the 2nd-4th round that would be just fine. _________________

That's just a lot of woulda coulda shoulda. Jenkins is a great prospect but he is A LOT more raw then either Claiborne or Kirkpatrick.
And no you cannot argue Kirkpatrick over Claiborne for injury reasons. Mo has been a rock at LSU. _________________ Welcome to Minnesota, Greg Jennings.

Do you really expect Winfield to make it 16 games? If he isn't out there it's Cook and Allen? UMN I would suggest you re watch our 2011 season. Our OL was not the problem. It was our secondary.
CB is our number 1 need, hands down. We gave up 50 TDs last year , 30 something through the air. We can't stop the pass. CB, CB, CB! _________________ Welcome to Minnesota, Greg Jennings.
