Crazy thought.

Couldn't Brees have just signed a 1 year fully guaranteed deal for the same price as what the Franchise Tag would be.......................and allow the team to franchise one of the other guys?

Why would he have done that if he were seeking $23 mil/yr?? To be a nice guy?? I think he's shown where his priorities lie in regard to team vs payment.

I realize it's not going to happen, but if you know you are going to get the tag anyway.......................

Whats the rule on that anyway, how many years in a row can you tag a guy?

Until either the team can't afford it anymore or until he says he'd rather sit out for the year than sign it...

You can only tag a guy 2 years

I believe that has changed with the new CBA, but the cost of the tag increases with each tagging.

Re: Calvin Johnson, if a WR can receive $60M guaranteed, stands to reason a QB like Brees should get more. He's reportedly asking for $69M.

Has Duncan lost his mind...? Johnson is a young player just starting his career and is already arguably#1 WR in the league. Brees is a top 4 QB on the downslide...

Or he's a top 2 QB who has just had one of the best seasons a QB has ever had... easy to spin it both ways

I had no idea throwing for more yards than any QB in history was evidence of a downslide...

Fact is, blockbuster deals impact other deals, regardless of position. Adam Schefter mentioned the same thing.

Ok so here goes nothing... try to follow me on this...

Other forum posts alluded to "...maybe Manning's contract is what will drive Brees' contract"... alright, reportedly Denver will pitch a 5yr 60mil deal including 30mil or so guaranteed. Now I may stink at math but that looks to me like 12mil/yr? Right? Does this deal look roughly familiar to anyone?? Hint: Manning is coming back from major surgery.

If this deal were to go forward... wouldn't you think Brees' might be inclined to take a 5yr 90-95mil deal with 30-35 guaranteed?

I think when you hear things about "Mannings contract driving Brees contract" I have to think it's in reference to Mannings last contract which had him getting paid 23min a year for the first three years. It was orchestrated by none other than Mr. Condon himself. I really think Drew and Condon are trying to structure a similar deal that is heavily frontloaded. Personally I think 19m a year is fair, but that's just me
