The pessimist (realist?) in me is coming out today and I think we'll punt this FA. Maybe sign an over the hill Hutchison. $50 million in cap room and I think our chief signing will be resigning Lawson.

Agreed, there is so much potential to make us a top notch team this offseason with the likes of Nicks, Meachem, any CB, Bush, Landry, Grubbs and we are going to resign our own and maybe bring in 1 guy from outside. BOOOOOO

Sadly, yes I am ready to be disappointed. It was fun fantasizing over all those mock off seasons though.

I know that building through the draft is prudent especially with this young team needing to grow together but yeah its still very disappointing.

The sad part is the team could be considerably improved, even while not spending much of the cap space. Sign Carl Nicks for 9 mil, re-sign Simpson for 1 or 2, re-sign Lee and McGlynn for minimums. The offense would be good to go for the draft, only needing an RB and an OG.

On defense, bring back Nelson, Fanene, Rucker, Sims, Lawson, and Brandon Johnson. Add Craig Steltz and Joe Mays. Draft a CB early.

That's only adding 1 top free agent, Nicks, and a couple of bargain guys in Mays and Steltz. Not expensive by any means.

'Disappointment' and 'Bengals' are two words that unfortunately have sat well together over the last 30 years.

Maybe next year with having to spend up to the salary cap floor, we might have more to look forward to than the Deuce Lutui's and Max Jean-Gilles of this world....

If we only signed Nicks as an outside FA, I would be content with this FA. I'd be worried about CB, but i'd be happy with what the Bengals did.

Agreed. I would love to see it be Nicks, Porter and a WR, just become the Saints of the Midwest and get Meachem.

But Porter should be a decently priced corner who can play well.

Spot on Sparky.

You thought about applying for the (vacant) General Managers position with the Bengals ?

Oh wait........

I would LOVE to see a play for Nicks or Grubbs but even if it doesn't happen I really like our front office right now. I think they have things going in the right direction. Just read Hobson talking about our efforts to save and pay the youngsters when their contracts are up in a year or so. Definitely think thats the smart route...as long as they don't let them leave like J-Jo....bastards.

Yeah that's the problem. He talks about signing our own, which is great because they have to do that, but then they don't.

For instance, while the Bengals are just sitting around watching everyone else go ape-poop with signings, they're letting guys like Pat Sims and Brandon Johnson shop around instead of offering huge deals.

Oh well. In general i agree with the concept. It's probably best to not pay a guy like Nicks $80 million, but at the same time it'd be good to wrap up some important players in house.

Thats true; at least next year he'll HAVE to spend the dough.

I won't be "disappointed" at all. Disappointed implies expectations. I knew the Bengals weren't going to make any big moves. They never do.

I guess there is a part of me that is the eternal optimist, but deep down I know this is the result.

**** Mike Brown. Heaven forbid we make a run.
