This seems to be a year of many franchise tags. Two reasons for that:
1. Due to the short pre-season last year a lot of short term (one year) contracts were signed, and a lot of contract year players were not extended, so their contracts are bound to expire now.
2. The new CBA establishes a different system to determine the Franchise tag numbers causing the qualifying amount to drop by up to 20%. So in some cases a franchise tag may even be cheaper than a long term extension.
This year teams will only have EITHER a Franchise OR a Transition tag available.
I'll try to keep track of the tags pinned on players.
Player names in ITALICS indicate RUMORS.

Fred Davis getting tagged will make some people sad. I know a lot of people drooled over the thought of him and Moeaki. _________________

Arian Foster has signed a 5 year deal, as has Stevie Johnson. Foster being signed means that there could be money available to re-negotiate extend Super Mario. But more importantly to us here in Arrowhead land...it frees up the Franchise Tag possiblity for Chris Meyers...which is one of the players I truly felt we would target. _________________

Val,
I don't care who signs and who we tag, though I think it'd be sweet if we didn't tag either because both decided to take their talents back to Arrowhead! _________________

Your right on that one. I just hink Bowes deal is cheaper and the easier one of the two to sign to a long term deal. _________________

Imteresting article from Teicher. We've kind of talked about it before, in regards to not having gobbs of money in salary cap, but the idea of signing Bowe long term today and still electing to not tag Carr is something we hadn't discussed.
| Quote: | Anything is possible, but that move wouldn't make any sense. The Chiefs have a lot of money tied up in their cornerbacks already. Flowers has a cap number of $8 million. Routt is somewhere north of $6 million. So now they're going to chew up another $10.6 million to franchise Carr?
The Chiefs recently had $37 million of cap room, but that was before they signed Routt. Bowe would cost more than $10 million against the cap on a multi-year deal. Carr would cost $10.6 million.
Suddenly, there's not much left for a quarterback and other offensive player not to mention draft picks. |

Personally, it is my opinion that Carr has not been in the long term plans for quite some time...my gut tells me that the team might have tried to talk parameters of a long term extension and either Carr was way off in the left field with his contract demands or just wants to test the market. IMO, after that Flowers was the man...then Routt was signed. I think the whole "We would love to have Brandon back" was largely a PR campaign...and I would be surprised if Pioli tipped his hand and said the team is letting Carr move on. I highly doubt Pioli would committ that much money to one position. I just want to see Bowe locked up long term....then we can move on with bringing in other free agents. |

Bigs...isn't only 1 mil of Routt's deal locked in though? I've stated this before, and I know it is bad business, but we could cut Routt. Though if we signed Carr and tagged Bowe, or even if we Tagged Carr I expect us to ship off whomever gets that tag, because as that article states, we will need to sign other players. _________________

I don't know what the Routt details are, but I am hoping that Carr gets tagged after Bowe re-signs...then we can try and trade him for maybe a second round pick. That would be the best-case scenario. I don't think Carr will be retained either way. |

Nic, I agree, and that is exactly what I was thinking. While I'd love a late first, most of those teams don't have a big enough salary cap to take in a 10 mil a year guy. I'm certain we could get Dallas' second rounder for him as hard up for him as they are. That would give us two pretty solid picks in the second and there could be a chance of taking a guy like Ta'Amu/Hightower if he falls, and someone like Zebrie Sanders or Massie. Couple that with anyone we take in the first and that is a pretty good first 2 rounds. _________________

As for trading Carr after being Tagged, I'm pretty sure there is a veto option by the NFLPA if they feel there was never any intention of keeping said franchised player. If a player is being shipped off to a team after being franchised for less then what would be perceived as a fair deal for both sides, then the case could be made that the original team had no intention of keeping the player to begin with, and nulfiy the trade, if not the actual tag, letting him go into free agency.
When Cassel was traded for a 2nd, there was talk of a possible veto by the NFLPA but since Cassel had no objections and liked the deal, they didn't say anything. With everything that's gone down in the last year, and the reduction in franchise tag salaries, I could see where someone might make a stink if we tagged Carr and then traded him for a 2nd rounder. We'd almost surely have to get a 1st for him, and that is a lot less likely.
And yes Routt's deal has some bonuses due after the start of UFA IIRC, that should we cut him before that date, he'd only be guaranteed like $1MM. _________________
