| Quote: | | The 49ers are not going to pay Brooks big money. The reason is because they already have his replacement at every-down OLB on the roster. Perhaps you've heard of him. He's a guy who goes by the name Aldon Smith. In Smith's second NFL season, the 49ers plan for him to be an every-down player. Smith will work this offseason to get ready to play OLB on base downs. Then, he'll move to DE to rush the passer in nickel situations. The 49ers believe Parys Haralson can continue in the same role that he filled last season as an OLB on first and second downs to set the edge in the run game. Haralson, who has been an every-down player in the past, could be an every-down player again in 2012. But he'll have to win that job. The 49ers will sign a pass-rush specialist in FA and draft someone who would fill a role similar to what Aldon Smith played last season as a rookie. |

Any OLB's on the FA market we could get to replace Brooks? If he leaves we have only Aldon and Parys. Teams usually carry 4, and at least 3. Wouldn't mind signing a bargain-bin FA that's good all-around (Brooks was that bargain-bin signing a few years ago) and grab a pass rusher in the draft. _________________ -Not taking this off until the 49ers win #6 |

| I would be very dissappointed if we lose Brooks and Haralson still has a starting job next year. |

I would be disappointed if any team really gave Ahmad Brooks 8 millions per year. That's insane for a player who has yet to take the next step. Calvin Pace got his insane deal after a much worse performance than Ahmad's, but when some team makes a mistake, it doesn't mean everybody else should too.
I think it will likely be Parys + Rookie again this year, only on the other side. _________________

Me too! But I understand it's a money issue. We have lots of guys we need to re-sign and probably some FAs we'd like to target. If someone offers Brooks a lot, then I think he's gone. But that would be a huge loss to us. Brooks and his 7 sacks was always in there as the same time as Aldon. So it's not quite right on passing downs to say Aldon would replace Brooks, it would be Haralson replacing Brooks - and that's a big drop off in pass rush ability. Plus Brooks was better than Haralson against the run too. I would practically give Haralson away just to free up enough money to add to whatever else we could give Brooks to meet another team's offer. _________________

That I could live with. In any case, one has to go, I think. _________________

I have the feeling that we might not meet Brooks' or Rogers' contract demands. We could lose them both. It would suck, but it would free up $$$ to spend elsewhere and we would continue to build through the draft and trust Fangio, Leavitt, Donatell, etc. _________________

Grab Mario Williams and we won't need to replace Rogers. Imagine.that.passrush. _________________

I would love it. He's like a fourth rounder this year. But I think he stayed at Stanford? I've looked multiple times cuzz I see him in mocks sometimes.
I think he rises to a second rounder next year with shayne shov back. Man that guy is a beast. Would really love him on our d, perfect _________________ ***WE RUN THE WEST!***

Just gonna throw this out here for all you draftnick animals on our board. Love to hear your thoughts on Shea McClellin possibly in the third? I like athletic freaks but I love high motor football players much more... _________________

Is anyone around here old enough to remember How effective Jim Jeffcoat was as an aging pass rush specialist for the cowboys? .... I present to you John Abraham _________________

Abraham is still one of my favorite players in the league. One of the best PURE pass-rushers I've ever seen. Not much good at anything else, but he can sure get to the QB.
As for the original thread, I think we're going to miss Ahmad Brooks a lot more than we think. He's all-around our best outside linebacker and was only getting better. _________________
