The Raiders might be if they plan to keep Wiz at LG. The Packers are running a ZBS right? |

I could definitely see it. Not out of the realm of possibility especially since we have McK. Veldheer/Wiz/Wells/Campbell?/Barksdale?. Wells would certainly be an improvement over Satele and go a long way to solidifying the line. _________________

I wonder why he wouldn't want to stay in GB.
I also wonder why GB doesn't feel the need to lock him up long term |

I also wonder why GB doesn't feel the need to lock him up long term | To your first thought: Money. Green Bay is by far the best fit in the NFL for Scott Wells. He is a light center. He may "weigh" 300 during the off season, but he plays 280. We run a ZBS, and Wells fits that to a T. He's the kind of guy that needs two huge guards on either side of him to succeed, which we've got in Lang and Sitton. He can't match up with a power pig one on one for very long, and yet in our system, he is a top 5 center. His technique, savvy and pride are admirable traits. And his pass pro is right up there with the best centers. Scott Wells is a great guy and I've heard that he's neighbors with Lang and Bulaga. Losing him will surely hurt, but I have had a weird feeling about this for a while.
As to your second thought: Ted Thompson doesn't have much love for those over 30. We have around 6 guys on our entire roster that are over the age of 30. And of those 6, Clifton looks like he'll retire, Driver may or may not be back, Howard Green is likely gone, and now it seems as though Wells will depart as well. The only guys that we'll go into next season older than 30 will likely be Ryan Pickett and Charles Woodson. Ryan Grant (whose the only player currently 29 years old) is likely gone as well. I think Teddy offered Wells what he thought he was a solid contract, and representative of Scotts' talent. But the rest of the league is not so frugal as TT, and I'm very confident that some team will overpay for Wells and I'm sure Scott's agent is aware of this. This is the way the Green Bay Packers are built. Young, year in and year out with a special core and complimentary role players. Wells is a great center, but special he is not. If Thompson has any inclination towards moving Flynn through a tag and trade, and resigning Jermichael Finley (who is a special talent, imho) - then losing Wells seemed to be in the cards. The Packers will likely go with next man up, and Evan Dietrich-Smith may carry the load for a year or two (or as it happened with the 7th round pick Wells, for many years). EDS has been in our system for a few years now, and has gotten starting experience. He's no Scott Wells, but this guy is no scrub and many teams may find themselves in worse situations at center by the time the regular season kicks off.
And also, this is the Green Bay media we are talking about. They are not even close to accurate on many accounts, and the Packers front office has been known to love the smoke screen. _________________

He's on the wrong side of 30 and doesn't play a premium position. Aaron Rodgers is vastly underpaid and will be commanding at or near the highest salary in the history of the sport in the near future. Jennings/Matthews III will be free agents soon.
I'd love to have Wells back and hopefully he and the Packers can agree on a fair deal, but we might have to go younger at the position with an eye to the future.
Also, I'm sure he does want to stay in GB, and the Packers definitely do feel a need to lock him up long term. It's just a matter of priorities between the two parties. How does Wells prioritize winning vs. security? How the Packers prioritize looking towards the future vs. a steady rock in the middle of the OL? _________________

Haven't Chris Myers already stated he wants to come back?
But back on topic, good for Wells, someone will probably overpay after his last year. _________________

Greenbay doesn't like older players, Wells is by no means part of that foundation GB built.
I could see him going to Denver or Tennesse (as some pointed out, the Titans would make a great match, except their Oline needs some serious work) _________________
