NFC North teams facing contrasting salary cap realities
| Quote: | In the case of the Bears, it's an estimated $25 million.
New general manager Phil Emery told the Chicago Tribune when he was introduced that his goal was to be a draft-driven franchise, but he didn't close the door on spending in free agency. |
| Quote: | | The Vikings are in rebuilding mode, but are only about $5 million under the cap, according to Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com. |
| Quote: | The Packers have a little more room to work with, being $10-$11 million under the cap.
|
What do you guys think? Does the position of any of the other teams make you nervous?
Do you think the Bears will be able to sign Forte long term, or will they simply franchise him? How will that play out?
What are some FA's that you expect the Lions NFC North rivals to go after? _________________

Hell, with $25M to spend I'd line Super Mario up opposite Peppers, and let loose the hell hounds. _________________ Are you getting Ziggy with it? |

What do you think they'd have to give up for Wallace? I don't see him being available, but was wondering what you think a deal would look like.

That would be terrible. _________________

That would be terrible. | Honestly, I'm not sure what they'd have to give up, but they have made big trades before for offensive players like the Cutler trade. And Cutler to Wallace would be pretty scary, and the fact they have the money to lock him up is what makes me think they may pursue him. _________________ Kate Upton for sexy President!!!

Mike Wallace is a RFA and since the new CBA got rid of the max tender on an RFA being a first and third, that means the new max is just a first. Mike Wallace will most certainly put a first round tender on Mike Wallace, and since Pitt is 11M over the cap, he won't get his deal this season.
BUT................
Chicago won't go after Mike Wallace. There is way too many WR's on the free market and they won't give up #19 for Wallace, along with paying his new contract. The only teams that will go after Wallace are the teams that have two first round picks. Cincy and NE will most likely be his landing spots if someone takes him away from Pitt.
Chicago will beef up their OL first and foremost. I fully believe that. Cutler means everything to them and I think the OL is their first priority, above signing Forte long term. _________________

But, why does the article show the cap room for all NFC teams but the Lions? _________________

Well sounds like the Steelers might give Wallace a 1st round tender so it'd be a 1st round pick. And the Steelers are like $11 million over the cap, might be tough for them to match an offer. _________________

I couldn't figure that out either. I found it on the Lions website. _________________

Or a team with a late 1st like the Ravens maybe. _________________

I couldn't figure that out either. I found it on the Lions website. |
What I heard on NFL Live last night, Cincy could offer him a deal that gives him a 20M dollar signing (or roster) bonus with a low annual salary and because of that first year cap hit being 20 something M because of the bonus, it would be impossible for Pitt to match and all Cincy would have to do is give them they're late first as compensation. After that first year, Cincy would have a low cap hit for Wallace throughout the rest of his contract. _________________

I was thinking Cinci or NE as well. I feel he goes to NE though. _________________

Thats almost right... or maybe they just said it wrong... For that to work the way your saying it would HAVE TO BE a Roster bonus to make it count that year and have it count for the Steelers that year. If it was a "signing" bonus teams are aloud to pro-rate that.
Anyways... Thats a brilliant idea where-ever you heard that, Patriots could definately do it too. They could even do it TWICE...(Forte/Wallace), (Williams/Wallace). Scary stuff about to happen I think. |

The scary thing is... Cincy has like, 40 or 60M (can't remember) they can spend to hit the cap. Only, say, 25M would be to Mike Wallace this next year and they still have 15 or 35M (depending if they are 40 or 60 under the cap) they can spend on FA's... and basically 20M would go off the books for the next year, and STILL retain Mike Wallace. _________________
