On your plant foot or drive foot? Im not saying that it wouldn't hurt... but driving into a tackle and the unknown changes of direction and plants put much more force on the toe then pitching. Baseball is a much less high impact sport. _________________

Yep. I've had turf toe myself and was able to play ball just fine (though admittedly it was softball, not baseball). Got it by lunging to first to beat out a throw and all of my weight went to my big toe which was just barely on the bag. However, I doubt I'd have been able to play even intramural football let alone pro football.
As a pitcher, even if it's on the plant foot, I'm sure it's still a bit painful at times but you're not consistently changing directions and putting a lot of your body weight on your toes. Most of your power from pushing off the rubber comes from the ball of foot and planting you're not putting a ton of weight just on the toes either. _________________

It's on my drive foot, and I drive with my toe, not the balls of my feet so when it gets inflamed and starts hurting (the pain is more annoying than anything), it hurts on my toe. I still can't imagine a case of turf toe where you miss like 3 months because of it. _________________

Well turf toe is basically a term used for any injury to the tendons of the foot. So they could be calling a partially torn tendon or ligament turf toe to play it down. That the issue with toe injuries. _________________

Next time it gets inflamed and starts hurting, run some 5 yard suicides for a half hour
And I agree. I don't think it's so much that the pain causes them to miss that amount of time, but rather its needed so that the pain does not re-occur and the injury is fully healed. Toe injuries like that linger and the only thing you can do to heal is rest it. In the NFL, especially as a CB, you live and die by the cuts you can make and if you're limited due to it, you're better served waiting it out. _________________

yea. so many times players try to come back to earl from connective tissue injuries and end up reinjuring themselves. Like i said earlier, I think Jim Cary Matches up well against vincent Floyd so i think if webb needs a game off that we'll be ok. Especially considering the way our pass rush has come alive. I'd rather have him 100% for the playoffs than 70 or 80% for the rest of the year _________________

Whatever. Next man up. We've survived some major injuries this year, so I'm not going to panic over this one either. _________________

That ESPN link cleared it up a lot. I guess i just thought a turf toe was some sort of sprain which I couldn't comprehend would sideline players for weeks.
Considering we have almost secured a playoff spot, it would be wisest to not aggravate Webbs injury. Give Gorrer and Carr some snaps instead, and see how they do. _________________

Looks like Turf Toe is taking a tour around Baltimore this year and seems to like it here _________________

I actually don't mind this injury as long as Webb can comeback 100% by the end of the season/start of the playoffs. The way I see it, this injury is somewhat similar to the Lee Evans situation. Had Evans never gone down, Torrey Smith doesn't see the extensive time that he does to develop on the field and he's perhaps still the same raw player he was at the beginning of the season.
With this injury Webb goes down and he was playing at a high level. He seems to be "seeing" plays before they happen and making plays, I'd expect that kind of thing to continue whenever he comes back. But this injury gives us a chance to have Jimmy Smith starting and building his confidence level as we approach playoff time. I expect this to also give our depth options a chance at building confidence as well. This type of confidence will be useful if/when we run into a prolific offense.
Jimmy Smith should get a chance to matchup against two top 15 WRs in the NFL with Vincent Jackson on Sunday night and AJ Green on the final game of the season. This should allow him to learn by trial and by the time the playoffs start be prepared for many different scenarios and less likely to give up the broken plays he's allowed to this point. _________________

You probably have a grade 1 strain, typically the NFL receives the grade 3 variety which is what Ben Grubbs and Jon Ogden both had/have.
The difference is comparable to stubbing your toe vs cutting it off, but they have the same diagnosis and the severity is rarely reported. Grade 1 is a strain, grade 4 is when your big toe becomes comletely dislocated(toenail touching the top of your foot) and the Tendons tear from the bottom of your foot. _________________

I had a very mild case lasting probably five or six months, and even then it wasn't fun when it came to any exercise. I can't imagine playing professional football with a toe that would hyperextend to the top of your foot. Ugh. It would be incredibly debilitating. |

I probably do. The pain that I experience (and actually, hey there it is!) is more like that feeling you get in your toe when you need to crack it or pop it, but you try it and nothing happens. It's just really consistent in that way to the point to when I throw it's just more of a "OMFG GO AWAY" feeling moreso than pain.
I can't imagine what those guys are feeling at a Grade 3. _________________

Along with the pain, when your body is hurt, it will sometimes just give out in order to avoid more injury so along with injuring himself more he could be a liability on the field. It doesn't happen all the time but it is certainly a possibility _________________

Not sure if you all saw, but:
| ESPN AFC North Blog wrote: | | Baltimore coach John Harbaugh disputed a report that cornerback Lardarius Webb will miss time with a toe injury, saying there were no serious injuries to come out of the game. “There may be some guys we rest throughout the course of the week, practice wise, but we anticipate everybody that was playing last week to be healthy this week," he said, via the team's website. When asked about Webb, Harbaugh responded, “Lardarius played last week, so you have that answer.” |
