With the 170th pick in the 2011 NFL draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars select...
Jabara Williams, LB, Stephen F. Austin
We wanted to hit linebacker earlier, but things didn't really fall right. Williams is undersized, but I feel he does have some potential. He was a 4 year starter, is really athletic, and is a hard worker and someone who is very coachable. He should compete well at WLB. In (the imaginary) free agency, it is fairly obvious that we will still be looking to add a couple of linebackers.
Welcome to Jacksonville! _________________

SoS's Analysis: Thomas is a player with a lot of potential but he was just dreadfully inconsistent at Buffalo. I honestly don't see him transitioning well to the NFL and he'll bring a good nickel CB at best.
#170 (from CLE) The Jacksonville Jaguars select: Stephen F. Austin LB Jabara Williams
SoS's Draft Grade: C+
SoS's Analysis: I have him as a late 6th and I have several LBs still available better than him. He's very instinctual but lacks ideal size to be effective. Not very strong and not overly fast will hurt his tranisition. |

Obviously I do not agree with Thomas' evaluation. Even a very good nickel corner is something this team needs, and I can easily see him out performing Mathis (if this were to happen). He needs training, obviously, but I feel as a gunner and special teams ace (I see the same with Jabara) he also adds extra value.
I want to say very nice job done this year, and I give you props for sticking to your guns and keeping the Gene Smith mentality strong throughout both drafts.

I pray to god they didn't think we drafted someone in the 6th round to start over a Pro-Bowl player. Unless that's what we told them. Outside of the first 2-3 rounds, you aren't drafting for starters. You're drafting for project players that have skills to potentially start in case of injuries or situational players (and this is years down the road...not immediatly). _________________

I think for the most part you are right. However, we may be in a position where the guys we take in Round 4 or 5 could see some serious PT _________________

I'd describe pretty much all of our picks after round 3 as "project players". Austin Pettis is probably the smallest "project" there.
Our picks in the first 3 rounds should all compete for a starting spot from day one. _________________

Absolutely. Kerrigan should start immediately as should Smith. Sash doesnt have much to beat out either _________________

If Smith isn't ready though, he will probably be able to play the slot for us at least.
Mike Thomas
Jason Hill
Torrey Smith
Jarett Dillard
Austin Pettis
Kassim Osgood
That is probably what our receivers would look like. Taking Smith and Pettis would probably be the end of Tiquan Underwood in Jacksonville. _________________

Even if we draft 1 WR, Underwood might be shown the door. His hands are awful _________________

*Average Draft Grade* B
Summary: Just a solid all around draft for the Jags. Their last pick was their worst grade and it was only a C+. Landed solid talent throughout the draft and stuck with the good character trend. Landed two solid receivers and two solid corners which were two big needs so I liked the focus they had. Trade was pretty much just to dump young players that didn't fit the team anymore.
*Overall Offseason Grade* B/B- - This one is close to a B- but I don't really like what the Jags did in trades and they didn't get a real steal anywhere aside from maybe Pettis. Really liked the direction they went in the draft, however. |
