[an error occurred while processing this directive] 2000 NFL Mock Draft
By: Chris Horwedel

Round 1 | Round 2 | Round 3

(Before I start writing this version of my mock draft I would like to pay my respects to former Hornets guard Bobby Phills who died this week in a car accident. Bobby, You no one ever doubted you're skill as a basketball player, but what made you special was you skills as a man. To often people look upon athletes and forget that they too, are human. Bobby was a classy person, a good person. If I ever have kids, I wish they could turn out to be like Bobby Phills. For years people close to Bobby urged him to go into politics, he was a very intelligent and articulate man who was bound for greatness from the day of his birth. This world lost a special person when we lost Bobby Phills.

This goes out too David Wesley, If by some off chance you ever read this, I know you're taking this hard. But it wasn't your fault. It wasn't anyone's fault. It's not fair, but sometimes bad things happen to good people and Bobby was a great person)

1 Cleveland Browns - It's the beginning of another long day for the Browns crew. Given that the NFL has allocated them like…..30 picks. They have nothing on this team but a couple of linebackers, a QB and one reciever, so they could do anything here. The first pick in the 2000 NFL draft:

Peter Warrick, WR, Florida State

- Warrick's pure excitement with the ball in his hands. While his 40 speed isn't amazing (4.47), his quickness is off the chart. Forget stopping on a dime, Warrick can stop and change direction on a grain of beach sand.

2 Washington Redskins (From New Orleans) - Lavar Arrington, LB, Penn State
- Can you name me one linebacker on the Redskins? Ok, maybe you can, but how about naming me one who possesses NFL type talent. Yeah, I didn't think you could. This just makes sense here. Arrington has all the tools to become a dominating player in the league.

3 San Francisco 49ers - Courtney Brown, DE, Penn State
- I say this only because I'm not allowed to predict trades. (You hear me Football's Future? You hear me!?!?!? Give me the power!!!!) Truth be told, the Niners just don't have the cap room to keep this pick. They know it, I know it, My pal Ron Dayne knows it, hell…..even little Danny McCall from Sarasota Florida knows it. But Courtney Brown will be the pick at number 3.

*If I were allowed to predict trades (which I'm not, so technically this blurb doesn't exist.) I would say this pick is going to the Washington Redskins for the #12 and #24 picks in the first round, plus a first rounder next year.

4 Cincinnati Bengals - Corey Simon, DT, Florida State
- Being picked by the Bengals basically means that Simon's knee's will act up and he'll be out of the league within 3 years. But hey…..look on the bright side Bengals fans, he's gonna be a nice player for you for the short time he's around. Simon needs to add a little weight, but he has everything needed to be an absolute stud DT.

5 Baltimore Ravens (from Atlanta) - Plaxico Burress, WR, Michigan State
- One thing's for sure, this pick just pissed off the Eagles fans worse than trading up for Mike Mamula a few years back. 6'6" ball catchers with fly-paper hands and the ability to get deep don't exactly grow on trees. Even the Ravens picked up on that one.

6 Philadelphia Eagles - Chris Samuels, T, Alabama
- And a cascade of boos can now be heard from every football fan in Pennsylvania. This pick brings to mind the names of Antone Davis, Bernard Williams and Jermaine Mayberry. Actually, Samuels has more potential than current Eagle LT Tra Thomas. If it's an consolation for Birds fans, I don't think he'll be around long and if he is, oh well, you'll all just have to live with having a pair of stuf tackles.

*Again, if I were allowed to predict trades (which I'm of course, not) I would say that this pick goes to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the #13 and #26 picks in the first round, along with a 4th round pick

7 Arizona Cardinals - Thomas Jones, RB, Virgina
- Jones is an enigma in the eyes of everyone but those who know about the draft. This 5'9" compact scat-back is likened to a guy you may, or may not have heard of, Emmitt Smith. Even dispite his small stature, he's not afraid to run between the tackles and hasn't been injury prone. He's going to be a good one.

8 Pittsburgh Steelers - Chad Pennington, QB, Marshall
- I watched him throw strikes to Randy Moss a few years back and thought he was a product of Randy's greatness. Them I watched him throw strikes to players with the skill of my grade school teacher, Mr. Morgan and I realized hat this guy is going to be a player. Here's my fearless prediction for this draft. Chad Pennington will be a star QB in the NFL someday.

9 Chicago Bears - Deon Grant, S/CB, Tennessee
- This is the first pick I really had to think about, it's not really clear cut here. Grant has the skills to be a good one, but probably not at CB like some think. He's a coverage safety and a damn good one. But his tackling problems have been pretty well documented.

10 Denver Broncos - Chris McIntosh, T, Wisconsin
- People seem to think that "Bubba" Franks is a lock here. I don't see it, I may be wrong, but I thought the Broncos were pretty high on there back up tight end. In any case, the offensive line is getting old and McIntosh makes sense here.

11 New York Giants - Shyrone Smith, RB, Virginia Tech
- I know some of you probably think I'm nuts, you're shouting at you're computer calling me an idiot. Screaming "Where's Ron Dayne? Where's Jamal Lewis? Where's Shaun Alexander?" Well…..I'm writing this and you're not, so shut up! Seriously though, Shyrone was a surprise entry and is the second best back in the draft (Sorry Ron).

12 Washington Redskins - Daniel "Bubba" Franks, TE, Miami (Fl)
- Franks has the proverbial "Skills that pay the bills." He's the most talented tight end to come down the pike in quite some time. A 6'6" 260 pound monster who can outrun most safeties. Oh yeah, rarely does he drop a ball thrown his way.

* I think that this pick will belong to the 49ers.

13 Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Sylvester Morris, WR, Jackson State
- Depending on how the combines go, Morris could be the first receiver taken or the 6th. He's got height (6'2"), he's got speed (4.3) everything you want for a WR. EXCEPT, he's never played against the big-time competition. But hey, neither did Randy Moss and he's doing OK.

*Ok now, were you paying attention? First test for you readers. If I were allowed to predict trades (Which we know I'm not and I'd never defy my superiors) who owns this pick? No you fool! You weren't paying attention were you? It's OK, just try and read a little more carefully now. This pick would belong to the Eagles in my hypothetical little world.

14 Baltimore Ravens - Ron Dayne, RB, Wisconsin
- Does anyone believe the Tony Banks hype? Na…..me either. But he's playing well so more power to him. The Ravens take on quite a new look with the additions of freakishly tall WR Burress and freakishly large bulldozer RB Ron Dayne. All he did in his college career was rush for more yards than anyone else in the history of college football.

15 Green Bay Packers - Dez White, WR, Georgia Tech
- Robert Brooks career may be over, Antonio Freeman never seems happy. So they might as well draft a reciever. White has great numbers 6'1" and 215 pounds of pure muscle. He's also one of the fastest receivers in the draft this year.

16 New England Patriots - Jamal Lewis, RB, Tennessee
- The Pats never did quite make up for losing Robert Edwards to that whole freak beach volleyball accident. Kevin Faulk wasn't the answer and Terry Allen? Come on, he's had his knees operated on about as many times as predictions I've made so far today.

17 Oakland Raiders - Brian Urlacher, LB/S, New Mexico
- You say you like versatility? You're going to love Mr. Urlacher. At New Mexico he played Safety and a little Tight End. Oh yeah and just to keep himself busy he found the time to return kicks and punts. He could be a special player or just another tweener who just couldn't make it.

18 New York Jets - Cosey Coleman, G, Tennessee
- When you're superstar QB is just coming back from a major injury it's never a bad idea to import a little more protection for him. You don't really see guards go this high. But Coleman's an exception.

19 Kansas City Chiefs - Darren Howard, DE, Kansas State
- Howard's stock has been shooting up as of late. He's got the size, he's got the speed. He's been productive. What else do you want?

20 Dallas Cowboys - Kwame Cavil, WR, Texas
- Kind of an interesting pick here for the Cowboys. There were kinda stuck, looking at players with criminal backgrounds. There's just none around this area and it's a little early to pick Lavernous Coles. If speed weren't looked upon as such a make or break attribute for WR's, Cavil's stock would be much higher. He's big and strong and has very good hands. A nice compliment to the Rocket.

21 Detroit Lions - Shaun Alexander, RB, Alabama
- Now you're all whining about how every pick is either a receiver or a running back, well that's just how it goes sometimes! With Barry's surprise departure last year the Lions were left with a running back problem the size Detroit. Some folk like Shaun Alexander more than I do. But there are just too many good backs for him to go that high. I guarantee the Lions aren't complaining.

22 Seattle Seahawks - Chris Hovan, DT, Boston College
- This is an insurance pick right here. Sam Adams may become a free agent and Tez hasn't been his dominating self lately. Hovan's a good heady player. He's solid, makes every play he can.

23 Carolina Panthers (from Miami) - Stocker McDougle, T, Oklahoma
- The Panthers offensive line has been, well….offensive. Stocker McDougle's more than a guy with a cool name. He's a guy with a cool name who happens to be a pretty good Offensive lineman. Who could ask for more?

24 Washington Redskins - Deltha O'Neal, CB, California
- Deltha O'Neal you ask? Well that's why I'm here. O'Neal's stock has been SOARING! Enough so that he'll be the first corner taken. He's good great size and good speed. He'll help out on the 49ers short secondary. Wait, did I say 49ers? I'm not allowed to predict trades, so we'll call it a Freudian slip.

*49ers could own this pick

25 Minnesota Vikings - Ahmed Plummer, CB, Ohio State
- The Vikings are known for taking the best player on the board, which would be Plummer's college mate Na'll Diggs. But they have a glaring need in the secondary, so naturally they call a plummer, because there corners have been playing like ____, well you know.

26 Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Marvel Smith, T, Arizona State
- Marvelous pick this late. Smith is a monster! Just a few inches shorter and a few pounds lighter than Godzilla. Smith however, is a better run blocker.

*This pick may belong to the Philadelphia Eagles

27 Buffalo Bills - Shaun Ellis, DE, Tennessee
- Ellis has been dropping for no reason and the Bills of Buffalo are more than happy to draft this gifted pass rushing defensive lineman.

28 Tennessee Titans - Na'il Diggs, LB, Ohio State
- Yet another really cool name. Diggs slides a bit too, but if you have to slide, the Titans aren't the worst place to land. This up and coming team gets another piece of the defensive puzzle with this stud linebacker.

29 Indianapolis Colts - John Engelberger, DE, Virginia State
- Doesn't even consider himself a real draft prospect. I can't decide if that's refreshing or scary? Anyways he made his mark on the college level and should continue to be a steady defensive presence in the NFL.

30 St. Louis Rams - Keith Bullock, LB, Syracuse
- The Rams don't really need all the much. But you can never have enough good players. Bullock is a sideline to sideline kind of player. He can do everything on the field.

31 Jacksonville Jaguars - Dwayne Goodrich, CB, Tennessee
- I've heard people say the the Jaguars have one of the best defenses in the history of the NFL. Ok now, maybe I'm missing something here, but I just don't see it. Dave Thomas? Come on now!
